Should my bf and i mach for formal?

my semi formal is coming up and i just got my dress. its dark purple with gold shimmer on it. and my boyfriend wants to wear a matching color. he was gonna get the same color as me...but he ended up getting a lilac/light purple shirt. and his tie is balck with light purple and dark purple designs (same color as my dress) would this look cute together...or just tacky? im not so sure about it but i dont want to hurt is feelings or anything. what do u think? thanks so much for the help :)
